A gorgeous, colorful installation called "Harmonic Convergence" by Christopher Janney is currently at the Miami International Airport. It's actually an interactive sound and light installation that plays the sounds of tropical birds, thunderstorms and other environments native to the region. Video sensors track movement causing changes in the density and composition of the sound piece relative to the number of passengers in the space. Check out the before and after.

There's nothing more fulfilling than creating something which can help others. That's why I loved finding out about Canstruction - conceived by the Society for Design Administration - it showcases design while collecting thousands of pounds of canned foods for the needy in NYC. Teams from all over compete for the best sculpture. Check out some of this year's submissions below. Winners will be announced on Mon, 11/14 and all structures will be on display until 11/21. So if you're in NYC, I encourage you to stop by! Visitors to the exhibit are also encouraged to bring canned goods to donate to the cause.

Remember those silly plastic playhouses that children of the 80s (such as myself) grew up with? My sister and I ripped through a few of them in our childhood - Looney Tunes being the most memorable. It wasn't really a house but more of a room, constructed by black plastic hollow tubing and yellow plastic connectors then draped with a distinct plastic-y smelling cover featuring all our favorite Looney Tunes characters.

Fast forward to 2011 and we have Play Modern Cuba and 2Cuba. Concepted by architect (duh), Kimball Hales, who realized his children should play in modern, sustainable playhouses rather than old toxic-infumed ones. The best thing about Kimball's playhouse is that the models can be reinvented and reconfigured. Kimball has it all figured out now doesn't he?

We went to Friday Nights at the de Young last week to see the highly anticipated Balenciaga exhibit - what a treat! Cristobal Balenciaga was a true master of couture. So many of his pieces are linear and streamlined - creating a beautiful silhouette of the female body. Most pieces I found to be timeless. One of my favorites in the postcard above - an evening bolero jacket made of burgundy silk velvet and jet. The passamenterie embroidery by Bataille. GORGEOUS.

This just in. Instagram now features a tilt shift "filter." Actually, it's more than a filter - an instant filter - not even listed with the other cool filters Instagram has to offer. I've always loved this lens technique in photos which makes things look like miniatures (the style iseasily recreated in photoshop). Now I can't resist but tilt shift every photo I take. The New York Times and Director Solve Sundsbo (also Fashion Photographer) partner up to create 14 short narratives using some of Hollywood's most famous actors.

Look what happens when you shoot in B&W, add some beautiful music tracks (by composer Owen Pallett) and feature today's hottest movie actors...

Unfortunately, only less than half really tickled my fancy. These include the Javier Bardem, Natalie Portman, Matt Damon, Michael Douglas, Vincent Cassel and Tilda Swinton.

After the 30 minutes of getting over how much the actor who plays Mark Zuckerberg looks like Michael Cera, I was able to get completely engrossed in this film. I had no idea all this drama had gone down in the early years of FB. Well-written and quite clever in some parts, the Social Network was very enlightening to say the least. First thing I did after getting home from the theater? Got on The Facebook.

Ah hell, might as well as throw Samberg in there.

Camouflage

I want to meet Desiree Palmen and watch her work on a project from beginning to end. So amazing. I'm sure each one takes her endless hours. How does she begin? A simple photo? Then what?Maybe step 2 is printing out that photo at life size. Followed by her "subject" dressed in all white and then laying over this life size photo. Then I imagine Desiree straddling her subject and using a pencil to lightly draw over the subjects clothes in order to complete the photo. But how does she match it so well? Oh Desiree. I have so many questions to ask you!

I did a little bit more research on this artist and found this beautiful article on her, "Portrait Seeks Cover." Here are a couple of paragraphs:

A ham and oyster bar next to The Lex? Pinch me, please. My basketball team had a BYE last week so instead of getting in some extra shooting practice we ended up at SF's new (and only) ham and oyster bar, Hog and Rocks, for delicious meats and oysters (and mussels, fish&chips, bratwurst, squash, fries you name it...). Also had a few pints and tried one of their cocktail specials: Ramas Gin. Yum. Bartender was uber friendly and our server, Megan Elizabeth, was extra sweet. Ended the night at the Lex with the girls, some laughs and plenty of PBRs. Hope there's another BYE this Thursday...

I'm not even a soccer fan. I never watch it. But it's just so easy to join the forces and sit at Civic Center with hundreds of other people to watch the World Cup. Nothing gets my adrenaline going more than seeing the reactions on faces from all over the world when we score. Apparently that comes along with a huge decline in productivity. Ah, who cares?! Plus, look how pretty these charts and graphics are! Would have taken me hours to make a 3D pie chart/globe/soccer ball!

Goldfrapp Ohh la la, Oakland Fox Theatre 6/26/10

Went to see Goldfrapp over the weekend at the Fox. This is my second time seeing them live. First time was at the Treasure Island Music Festival - the sun was setting and a cool breeze from the bay sent the ribbons on Alison's dress floating across the stage. She is AMAZING. Great stage presence, so much energy, fun costume changes and the double fan action on her the whole night was quite impressive. Couldn't help but wonder if she wore contacts and if they were getting dried out. What? These are things that cross my mind when under the influence. Enjoy the video!

I find the videos to be very nostalgic - a Mr. Roger's sort of look and feel but much more dramatic. The creative crew is only made up of 6 people including Isabella. I love the fabulous art direction, set design, unique costumes and mysterious music. All this combined with Isabella's creepy VO makes for one of the most captivating sex ed videos I've ever seen.

P.S. I find the bed bug knife penis most enticing.

SF crime in 3D

Our beautiful city by the bay and a 3D representation of all its crime from 2009. Although most was expected, some are a bit more shocking than others. Most intriguing is Mt Fuji on Shotwell St. or should I call it Mt. $Sex. Then if you're looking to score some crack, just get off at the 16th Bart station.

As an AD I'm constantly searching for ways to make designs more interesting and have more depth. Sometimes adding a simple texture will do the trick. Throughout the years I've tried to capture as many textures as possible (denim, bark, fur, grass, etc.) and archived them on my HD. Then I came across this website - cgtextures.com - more textures than you could imagine. Some that I would probably never need or even want to use. But as they say, one woman's junk is another woman's treasure...make sure to check out the user gallery. Oh and did I mention that all you have to do is register and you get a free 15MB account? Oh snap.

Told my friend I'd say something about Astroglide, her new client. Really, what is there to say? And with 4 followers only...how effective will this be? But I promised to talk about so here goes.

It's Astroglide. It makes something that is already great, more amazing. HDTV is great but going to the game and throwing the opening pitch is amazing. A vacation in Hawaii is great but owning one of the Fiji Islands is amazing. Going down a slide at the playground is great but shooting down the Wild Wadi waterslide in Dubai is amazing.

Astroglide. It's fun! It's smiles all around. It's a win - win situation. Who doesn't like to win?

Just came across an article in Creativity magazine. Artist Diem Chau was commissioned by Wieden + Kennedy to carve World Cup athletes out of crayons. This was part of their "Write the Future" campaign and several press kits featuring these tiny creations were sent out. Just look at the attention to detail. Love that she kept the bottom wrapper of the crayon in tact. Check out Diem's gallery on diemchau.com. She makes writing your name on a grain of rice sooo yesterday.

I've recently been curious to try acupuncture and heard some great reviews about Circle Community in my neighborhood. They offer very reasonably priced services (sliding scale) including on site massages. The reason it is so cheap is because they treat people in a group setting - imagine a circle of recliners in someone's living room - and there are only 3 practitioners (usually 2 on duty). I've been twice now with my sister and both times walked out feeling more grounded and relaxed than when I walked in.

Who thought getting pricked with needles could be so relaxing?

Jury Duty - not so bad

I've been putting it off for awhile but finally decided to go. I mean, why not? I'm getting paid by my employer still and I can have a nice day off work to reflect on our government. Yes there's always the waiting in a room full of strangers and different smells but this time (yes, this is my second time attending) I'm ready and equipped with the tools necessary:

1) a laptop with CS4 on it

2) internet access for possible blogging, facebooking and gchatting

3) a cup of coffee and a delicious bacon breakfast sandwich

So my friend, Evan, is amazing. He runs his own clothing line called Adapt. It's urban, it's hipsterish and it's awesome!
